On Glycosuria caused by Excess of Carbon-Dioxide in the Respired Air.

چکیده
For the purposes of a research upon the effects on the respiratory exchanges and metabolism of varying the percentage of oxygen in the air breathed, a specially constructed apparatus was devised in which animals under experiment (usually cats) could be kept for as long a period as was desired in an atmosphere containing a constant percentage of oxygen, the carbon-dioxide produced by the animal being absorbed almost as rapidly as it was formed by a large quantity of soda-lime placed in the chamber. One of the main objects of the enquiry being that of studying, in addition to the gaseous exchanges, the metabolism of the animal as shown by the urine; it was a routine procedure in all cases to examine the urine for abnormal constituents, and in particular for the products of incomplete oxidation, in those cases in which the percentage of oxygen was made less than that in the atmosphere. Amongst such constituents dextrose was always tested for in the urine, and was invariably found to be absent, even when the animal had been kept in an atmosphere containing 5 to 6 per cent. only of oxygen for a period of several hours, provided that the carbon-dioxide formed during the period had been efficiently removed by the sodalime placed in the respiratory chamber. On one occasion, however, the soda-lime failed for some reason to act sufficiently in absorbing the carbon-dioxide, so that at the end of an experiment of i6 hours duration, the respiratory chamber was found to contain IO03 per cent. of carbon-dioxide and 7-7 per cent.

Ecological Interpretation of Leaf Carbon Isotope Ratios: Influence of Respired Carbon Dioxide
In a Neotropical moist forest at Barro Colorado Island, Panama, 6'3C values of CO2 in air and (13C values of leaf tissue exhibit parallel patterns of variation between the forest floor and the canopy. During the daytime, 613C values of CO2 from air sampled at 1 m and 0.5 m were significantly less than that at 25 m. Based on mass balance equations, up to 18% of the CO2 in air at 0.5 m above the ...
متن کاملCO2 Removal from Air in a Countercurrent Rotating Packed Bed, Experimental Determination of Height of Transfer Unit
Carbon dioxide capture is a key issue in climate change mitigation. For decades the removal of carbon dioxide has been an essential step in many industrial processing operations such as the synthesis of ammonia, natural gas purification, and oil refining. In this study, a rotating packed bed has been designed for absorption of carbon dioxide from an air stream. The rotating packed bed is a comp...
متن کاملCarbon-isotopic composition of soil-respired carbon dioxide in static closed chambers at equilibrium.
The carbon-isotopic composition (delta13C) of soil-respired CO2 has been employed to evaluate soil carbon-cycling processes and the contribution of soil CO2 emissions to canopy and tropospheric air. These evaluations can be successful only when accurate isotope values of soil-respired CO2 are available. Here, we tested the robustness of delta13C values of soil-respired CO2 obtained after long i...

The study provides a statistical trend analysis of different air pollutants using Mann-Kendall and Sen’s slope estimator approach on past pollutants statistics from air quality index station of Varanasi, India. Further, using autoregressive integrated moving average model, future values of air pollutant levels are predicted. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, particu...
متن کاملUse of Carbon dioxide versus air blower in on-pump beating-heart coronary artery bypass surgery
Introduction: The use of carbon dioxide blower has been recognized as the standard of care in patients undergoing beating coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) due to higher solubility and lower risk of embolization. On the other hand, the compressed air blower has gone out of use since air can be easily trapped and is less soluble which can cause coronary embolism. The prese...
